The region is well known for Shosenkyo and many other scenic spots, and has close connections with the famous samurai general of the Sengoku period, Takeda Shingen. Kofu has also flourished as a castle town since the days of the Tokugawa shogunate. The city was home to many artisans who worked with precious stones and metals.
